The Mexico resorts in the Resort Finder sit on two coasts. This page covers the Pacific side: 28 resorts in five areas. The Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit area has the most with 13, Los Cabos follows with 10, and Mazatlan (2), Huatulco (2) and Ixtapa (1) complete the list. Nine are adults-only and 19 welcome children. If you are picturing the Caribbean side instead, head to the Cancun and Riviera Maya pages.

Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, and one airport, Los Cabos International (SJD), serves both San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Five of the ten resorts are in Cabo San Lucas, three of them RIU resorts on Medano Beach. The other five describe a Sea of Cortez setting, most around San José del Cabo and the Tourist Corridor. Listed drive times from the airport run from about 25 minutes at Zoëtry Casa del Mar to about an hour at Breathless Cabo San Lucas and Riu Palace Baja California. Four Los Cabos resorts are adults-only and six welcome children.

Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit share one airport (PVR). The shortest listed drives are in Puerto Vallarta itself: Sunscape Puerto Vallarta lists about 10 minutes, Dreams Vallarta Bay and Secrets Vallarta Bay about 15. On the Riviera Nayarit side, Riu Flamingos sits on Playa Flamingos with Riu Vallarta next door, and UNICO 20°105°, which opened in September 2025, lists about 25 minutes. Farther out on the Punta de Mita road, Grand Palladium Vallarta lists about 45 minutes, and Iberostar Selection Playa Mita is in Higuera Blanca, which the Riviera Nayarit tourism office places on its Southern Coast rather than among its Banderas Bay towns. Four resorts here are adults-only and nine welcome children. For whales, the tourism office gives December to March as humpback season, and the Dreams Vallarta Bay page lists whale watching from November to March.

The three smaller areas each show their own airport in our data: Mazatlan (MZT), Huatulco (HUX) and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo (ZIH). Mazatlan has two family resorts, both with a water park. Huatulco has one family Dreams and one adults-only Secrets, on separate bays. Ixtapa has a single family Sunscape. By brand, 15 of the 28 belong to the Hyatt Inclusive Collection family, seven are RIU or Riu Palace, and the other six are Hard Rock, UNICO, Le Blanc, Grand Palladium, Iberostar Selection and Wyndham Alltra.

How to choose

Start with who is traveling

Nine resorts here are adults-only and 19 welcome children. Of those 19, 17 are tagged for a kids' club, eight for a teen club and seven for a water park. Zoëtry Casa del Mar Los Cabos is aimed at adults but does permit children. Mazatlan and Ixtapa have no adults-only resort in our data, so for a child-free stay look at Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, or Huatulco.

In Los Cabos, ask about the beach first

The Los Cabos tourism office says some stretches of sand are unsuitable for swimming because of rough surf, rip currents and undertows, and it tells visitors to look for green flags. Resort pages say similar things: Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos warns that strong currents make the ocean unsafe for swimming, Riu Palace Baja California notes that the swimmable part of its beach is about 2 km away, and Breathless Cabo San Lucas describes its stretch of Medano Beach as swimmable. If ocean swimming matters to you, tell me and I'll check resort by resort.

Look at the drive from the airport

Listed drive times vary widely inside one destination: roughly 25 to 60 minutes in Los Cabos and roughly 10 to 45 minutes in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. Not every resort page gives a time. Six resort pages in our data also say airport transfers are not included or cost extra, so ask me to confirm how you will get from the plane to the lobby.

Know the adults-only and family pairs

Two Secrets resorts sit beside a family Dreams sister: Secrets Vallarta Bay next to Dreams Vallarta Bay, and Secrets Bahia Mita adjoining Dreams Bahia Mita. Secrets guests can use the Dreams side as well. If you want no children in sight, note that the Secrets Bahia Mita page warns its guests may see families because of the layout.

Yes, nine of the 28. In Los Cabos: Breathless Cabo San Lucas, Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos, Riu Palace Baja California and Secrets Puerto Los Cabos. In Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit: Riu Palace Pacifico, Secrets Bahia Mita, Secrets Vallarta Bay and UNICO 20°105°. In Huatulco: Secrets Huatulco. Le Blanc, Riu Palace Baja California and Riu Palace Pacifico show a minimum age of 18; for the others, ask me and I'll confirm the age rule.

Which Pacific-side resorts have a water park for kids?

Seven are tagged for a water park: Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos, Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas and Riu Santa Fe in Los Cabos; Grand Palladium Vallarta and Sunscape Puerto Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit; and Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán and Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan. They differ: the three RIU resorts use the brand's Splash Water World parks, Grand Palladium Vallarta describes a small kids' water park, and Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has a mini water park with five slides at its kids' club.
